A bypass puts heart into this north-facing surf haven

Developers have focused on Gold Coast meccas such as Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach over the past 20 years but other areas have missed out. The beaches close to Coolangatta airport were known as great for surfing but until recently the surrounding streets had a rough-and-ready reputation.

Surfers and Broadbeach types aspired to sports cars and flash suits while Kirra locals were happier to get about wearing stubbies.
